About

Terry Beard is a mixed media artist based in Cambridgeshire, UK. She was born in Canada, and lived in Ireland and Uganda as a child, before attending art college in England, where she studied textile design. After completing a Masters Degree in printed textiles, Terry worked as a freelance designer and illustrator for many years, before moving to Cambridgeshire with a young family. This enabled her to concentrate on the development of her own work, which has a deep engagement with the environment. She explores an ever-changing landscape in the Huntingdonshire Fens. Her work distils the rhythms, structures and atmosphere into an abstract visual language. Through expressive marks, layered blocks of colour and linear gestures, her paintings evoke a sense of space, depth and emotion, inviting viewers to reflect on their own relationship  with place, memory and the environment.

"My work is an intuitive response to the natural and built environment, evocative of landscape, water and woodland. I am particularly influenced by the Fens, which surround my home and studio. This landscape is mainly flat agricultural land, punctuated with areas of woodland and drainage channels. Water is a constant source of inspiration as I am close to an area of preserved fenland with many ditches, dykes and drains. Other places have also influenced my work, which aims to capture the essence of place rather than a realistic representation.

I use a range of materials and processes in my work, including screen print, acrylics and collage. Transparent colour is built up with a blank screen, added to or altered with acrylics or household paint, built up with self-made collaged newsprint or tissue, until I'm happy with the result."
